Car of the Year for 2006: The Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

Chevrolet Monte Carlo

The Chevrolet Monte Carlo is a 2-door car available at your Chevrolet dealer. The Monte Carlo came in four configurations: LS, LT, LTZ, and SS. The SS configuration is powered by the 5.3-liter eight-cylinder engine, which makes 28 highway miles and 20 city. The Monte Carlo competes in the Coupe market segment, in direct competition with Kia.

2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Specs

The Monte Carlo SS is equipped with a General Motors 5.3 liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The engine is mated to a General Motors 4-speed Transaxle. This configuration has proven to be a successful design for Chevrolet.

The 2006 Monte Carlo's exceptional fuel system runs on gas. The fuel is regulated electronically, with a fuel-injected MFI style of design. The fuel capacity of the car is 17.00 gallons.

The Monte Carlo uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. Steering is handled through a power-steering rack-style configuration. The car uses coil and coil springs front and rear respectively.

Monte Carlo SS Statistics

The dimensions of the Monte Carlo SS are 72.90 inches wide by 196.70 inches long. It sits a comfortable 55.80 inches off the ground. It seats a standard five passengers, with 2 doors. The wheelbase of 110.50 allows for limited leg room for the backseat passengers.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $23,430 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of $22,141. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 2-door Coupe.

A powertrain warranty is provided (36,000 miles/36 months), and a 36,000 mile, 36 month guarantee also comes with the Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Fuel Efficiency

The Monte Carlo SS received a miles-per-gallon rating of twenty in-city driving and twenty eight when it came to long-distance. Being a gas-powered non-hybrid car, this was subpar.

In Summary

The 2006 model year was unsuccessful for the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the SS version) meant that buyers had several options to choose from..

There's no doubt that Chevrolet is up to it's old tricks with the Monte Carlo? I'm hoping next year's example is improved.
